Vehicle Solutions (Training & Inspection)

The Straight Truck Series is a collection of training programs which emphasize the essential skills necessary for staying safe on the road while operating a straight truck. This series is appropriate for all levels of truck drivers, from the entry-level to the veteran driver operating any type of straight truck.

Vehicle Inspections training is designed to help truck drivers understand the basics of a pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspection on a straight truck. Specifically, the importance of routinely inspecting your vehicle even when it may not be required by the regulations.

  • After completing this course, learners will be able to:
    • Conduct a thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspection
    • Discuss the importance of using the same inspection routine every time they drive
    • Explain when a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) is required, and how to complete one

  • Program addresses the requirements of 49 CFR Section 392.9 and Part 393, Subpart I
  • Covers key topics, including:
    • Pre-trip and en route responsibilities related to cargo loading, cargo inspection, and cargo securement
    • Differences between direct tiedown and indirect tie down methods
      • How each method affects the number of tiedowns required
    • Restraining capacity of tie down devices, how to determine them, and how they affect cargo securement
    • Determining the minimum number of tiedowns required for loads, and know why it often makes sense to go above and beyond the minimum requirements
    • Proper cargo securement techniques
    • Securement requirements for several common types of cargo typically hauled by flatbeds

  • More than a quarter of all work-related fatalities occur in occupations that require driving, or the transportation of goods, making the need for defensive driving skills clear. In order to avoid injury, or worse, death, drivers need to understand what defensive driving really means and what unique challenges a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) driver faces… even for veteran drivers.
  • Defensive driving involves intentionally driving in such a way as to reduce the risk of an accident. This program is designed to help drivers develop their defensive driving skills.
  • Ready-to-use defensive driving training program includes several components

The Straight Truck Series is a collection of training programs which emphasize the essential skills necessary for staying safe on the road while operating a straight truck. This series is appropriate for all levels of truck drivers, from the entry-level to the veteran driver operating any type of straight truck.

Driving Techniques training is designed to help truck drivers understand the basic driving techniques that will help them develop the skills and attitude necessary to safely operate a straight truck. Specifically, it covers the importance of defensive driving and knowing how to safely maneuver a straight truck through turns and intersections, over railroad crossings, while merging and passing, and while driving through roundabouts. The program also covers how your driving techniques should change when driving at night or in extreme weather conditions.

  • After completing this course, learners will be able to:
    • Discuss defensive driving strategies to protect themselves while on the road
    • Apply proper driving techniques to safely operate their straight truck
    • Identify precautions to take when driving at night and in extreme weather conditions

  • Helps motor carriers and drivers remain in compliance with the FMCSA regulations.
  • Avoid costly (and potentially deadly) breakdowns and accidents (due to equipment failure) when on the road by understanding the requirements of the three types of vehicle inspections that must be performed on a CMV:
    1. Pre-Trip (FMCSR Sec. 392.7 and 396.13) – Performed before taking a vehicle on the road to identify problems that could cause a breakdown or crash.
    2. On-the-Road (FMCSR Sec. 392.9) – Performed while driving (check of dashboard gauges) and whenever stopped (check of tires, wheels, rims, brakes, lights, electrical and air connections to trailer, trailer coupling devices, and cargo securement).
    3. Post-Trip (FMCSR Sec. 396.11) – Performed at day’s end and includes filling out a driver vehicle inspection report (DVIR) and listing any problems discovered.
  • After using this program, drivers will know:
    • How to perform each of the three types of inspections
    • When each inspection needs to be performed
    • The importance of performing these inspections every time to prevent the possibility of costly (and potentially deadly) breakdowns and accidents (due to equipment failure) when they are on the road.

Discusses the potential threats drivers face and their best course of action to keep themselves safe from theft and physical violence, including:

• Protecting themselves against potential dangers to their personal safety during trip planning, when on the road, and during every stop along the way.
• Developing a heightened sense of awareness of their surroundings and any potential dangers they may encounter.
• Recognizing threats and reacting appropriately to keep the situation from escalating.
• Applying techniques to minimize their risk of being targeted.

This series is appropriate for all levels of truck drivers, from the entry-level to the veteran driver operating any type of straight truck.

Loading & Unloading training is designed to help truck drivers understand the basic techniques that will help keep them safe while loading or unloading their straight truck. Encompasses procedures drivers must follow to avoid injuries lifting, moving, and placing material. Safety measures for using equipment at loading docks and lift gates. Additionally, practices for safe loading and unloading of unique straight trucks like tree movers, dump trucks, etc.

  • After completing this course, learners will be able to:
    • Apply proper techniques to stay safe while loading and unloading their straight truck
    • Recognize potential hazards and identify precautions to take in order to prevent injuries while loading and unloading
    • Describe how to safely apply cargo securement devices to protect the load

  • Aimed at drivers of Class 1-6 light and medium duty vehicles
  • Presents defensive driving techniques that can be applied to light and medium duty fleet vehicles such as company cars, pickup trucks, utility vans, step vans, straight trucks, and non-CMV regulated vehicles
  • The Defensive Driving for Light & Medium Duty Vehicles training program covers:
    • Defensive driving techniques
    • Seeing and being seen
    • Preparation
    • Hazard perception
    • Speed and space management
    • Driver attitude
    • Distracted driving
    • Adverse weather conditions

Backing & Parking training is designed to help drivers understand the techniques that will help them avoid an accident or incident while backing and parking straight trucks. It addresses procedures drivers need to follow to avoid collisions, including causes, preventative measures, overhead obstructions, and good parking and backing techniques.

  • After completing this course, learners will be able to:
    • Discuss how to avoid a fixed object collision while backing or parking
    • Apply proper driving techniques to safely back and park a straight truck
    • Identify ground-level, eye-level and overhead obstructions that have the potential to make contact with their truck
  • Designed for use with the CMV Driver Basics training program
  • Provides a portable, plain-English reference to be used during and after training
  • Helps drivers improves retention of material covered
  • Reviews key points from the training video
  • Includes perforated receipt to provide proof of training for driver files

Tanker Vehicle Inspections features a 22-minute video that shows drivers:

  • How to check for a variety of vehicle defects and deficiencies
  • The importance of pre-trip en route, and post-trip inspections
  • Requirements for completing DVIRs when defects or deficiencies are found or known
